For those that don’t know, this is a rare book written by a pseudonym of fantasy author David Gemmell. To my knowledge, it is his only foray into non-fantasy. It was a limited run and therefore very hard to track down.
On to the book… it was just “ok”. I’m giving it 4 stars as a tribute to the rest of his works. It’s a shame that he passed away as the fantasy genre could really use him.
It’s pretty easy to see that Gemmell’s true calling was fantasy and not real life topics. I realize that this book is sort of a hommage to a real life person that was fairly influential to him but this was a tough read. The dialogue is limited to simple one liners back and forth between little developed characters. This was strange to me as developing characters is really what Gemmell does best. Druss, Waylander, Jon Shannow, Decado, these are all classics. This book just wasn’t memorable to me in any way other than the fact that it is such a rare find from a collector stand point.
That being said, Gemmell still stands as one of my favorite authors. He will be sorely missed. RIP
